You may know this beetle as a Scarab from Egyptian times.  And you would be correct!  Scarabs were popular amulets in Ancient Egypt.  To Ancient Egyptians the scarab was a symbol of rebirth.

The Scarab became popular in jewelry making during Art Deco era which coincides with the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1923.
